Coffee flavoured topping bun with butter filling freshly baked from the oven. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Best eaten hot! That’s the first aroma you smell once stepped into the Suria KLCC ( what a strategic location!). I used to work in Guardian KLCC and had my good share of Rotiboy back then! During my recent visit back to Malaysia, I’m pleasantly surprised the business is still going strong with people lining up for Rotiboy (me included!). Did I mention the founder is from my childhood hometown, Bukit Mertajam? Go BM boy!

Savoury Chinese 5 spices donut deep fried into golden brown topped with sesame seeds. Best eaten hot as a snack!

#3 Claypot Butter King Crab

Claypot Butter King Crab


Finger lickin’ good king crab cooked with creamy butter sauce with fragrant curry leaves. Served with soft bun to soak into creamy butter sauce. Yummm!!

#4 Mee Goreng

Mee Goreng


Mee goreng literally means fried noodle in Malay. Thin yellow noodles fried with garlic, onion or shallots, fried prawn, chicken or beef, sliced bakso (meatballs), chili, vegetables, tomatoes, egg, and acar (pickles). There’s another variation called “Maggi Mee Goreng” which uses instant noodles instead of yellow noodles.


Any mamak stall or Malay hawker centre.

Mamak: ” In Malaysia, the term mamak refers to Tamil Muslims, who generally own and operate them. Although traditionally operated from roadside stalls, some modern mamak stall operators have expanded their businesses into restaurant or cafe-type establishments. Mamak stalls tend to be popular among Malaysian youths as hang out spots, due to cheap food and beverages being served 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

#5 Har Mee/Prawn Mee

Har Mee/Prawn Mee


Combination of yellow egg noodles and rice vermicelli  in a rich broth made of prawn and pork rib stock topped with whole/sliced fresh boiled prawn and slices of pork.


Most Chinese hawker centres would sell this dish. For your information, in Penang, prawn mee/har mee is referred as “Hokkien mee”.

#6 Bak Kut Teh 

Bak Kut Teh

Bak kut teh served with white rice, yau char kuay,chopped garlic in sweet soy sauce,dark soy sauce and soy sauce


Pork rib soup made with variety of Chinese herbs and spices. I find bak kut teh to be a dish of an acquired taste. Bak kut teh is usually eaten with rice , and often served with yau char kwai (strips of fried dough) for dipping into the soup. Soy sauce (usually light soy sauce, but dark soy sauce is also offered sometimes) is preferred as a condiment, with which chopped chilli padi and minced garlic is taken together. Chinese tea of various kinds (the Tieguanyin variety is especially popular in the Klang Valley area of Malaysia) is also usually served in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the copious amount of fat consumed in this pork-laden dish. Bak kut teh is typically a famous morning meal.


Klang is famous for their bak kut teh. It’s quite a long drive from the city centre in KL but it’s worth a visit!

#7 Wan Tan Mee

Wan Tan Mee


There’s 2 variation of wan tan mee in Malaysia. It is either served ‘dry’ in black sauce with steamed dumplings in a broth served separately or ‘wet’ in broth with steamed dumplings. It is also served with BBQ pork and pickled green chilli.

#8 Pasembur



A Malaysian Indian salad consisting of cucumber (shredded), potatoes, beancurd, turnip, bean sprouts, prawn fritters, spicy fried crab, fried octopus or other seafoods[1] and served with a sweet and spicy nut sauce. It is called pasembur in Penang and the term Rojak mamak is more commonly used elsewhere.

#9 Yam Rice with Meatball Soup

Yam Rice With Meatball Soup


Signature dish of mainland Penang. I MUST visit my favourite yam rice restaurant each time I return home ( just ask my mum!). Chunks of yam cooked with dark sauce flavoured rice served with meatball soup. The soup is sourish cooked with salted vegetables in pork broth and ingredients to be put into soup such as meatball,slices of pork,innards,liver can be chosen according to individual preferences. If you’ve ever find your way to BM,you MUST visit the restaurant ( I’ll give you personal direction if I must!)

#10 Wan Tan Hor

Wan Tan Hor


Flat rice noodles cooked with egg gravy sauce with prawns/pork/fish and choy som vegetables. It is referred as ‘Tua Pan’ in Penang.
