French Charm at Roule Galette

“J’aime la galette, savez-vous comment ? Quand elle est bien faite, avec du beurre dedans.” (“I like galette, do you know how? When it is made well, with butter inside.”)

Little lane surrounded by boutiques

Half the pleasure of dining in Melbourne is to discover hidden treasures tucked away in little laneways. And, Roule Gallette fits the description perfectly. Located on Scott Aley off Flinders lane and surrounded by little boutiques ,this little cafe bespoken of European charm. With its table and chairs placed outside the terrace opening to an intimate dining area inside, with murmurs of French being spoken , this scene is also quintessentially Melbourne ( my interpretation of what makes Melbourne ‘Melbourne’).

You can order a take away and watch the action taking place .Or simply step in the tiny cafe and sit side by side other patrons in an intimate setting.

You can watch the work in action!

Galette Complete - ham, cheese and egg on the top with butter

As the name suggests, Roule Galete is famous for its galette. Galete is a savoury pancake which originated from the French region of ‘Bretagne’. It is not a surprise to find the owner,Michael, hailed from Britanny. Unlike sweet crepe, galete is made from buckwheat flour and is served with fresh fillings such as ham, cheese, smoked salmon and even escargot (snail)!

Lunch was in the order and I’m hungry ( run if you ever hear these words muttered from me)! So,we opted for the savoury option to fill us up ( I won’t judge if you go straight for the sweets even it’s for lunch!). I always like to order the most traditional item on the menu whenever I try something new. Hence, it’s only predictable I ordered -Galette Complete. Galette complete comes with ham, grated cheese and egg on the top served with a dollop of butter.

I devoured the meal in front of me and before long, I was staring at an empty plate and with an empty stomach. Don’t worry, I did take note of what I’ve eaten. The pancake was thin and light and the egg was perfect. The perfect drink with a galette/crepe would a cider.Would love to try the sweet crepe the next time.

Tuna salad galette shapped like a fish (at least to me!)

When I was looking with curiosity the ornaments with French theme placed all over the room, the waiter was kind enough to answer my questions. He even brought a hardcover photography book covering Britanny. Flipping through the pages, we admired the scenery, the traditional costumes, and culture as he gave us a rundown. This is the kind of personal service you get. However, having said that, don’t come hungry as service may be slow.Just like Britanny, the pace of life is slower and people take their time to enjoy their food with conversation flowing amid the hustle and bustle of the waiters.

Go if you love a charming French cafe and perhaps practice your long bygone French lessons, a fan of crepe or you want an intimate cafe to impress a date..
